Why work with a clinical psychologist?

If you've had counselling before, you may already know how valuable it can be to have a space where somebody really listens. You may now be looking for something more active: not only talking about what is happening, but understanding why it keeps happening and what might help it change.

As a Clinical Psychologist, I use psychological formulation to help us make sense of your difficulties together. We'll think about how your experiences, relationships and ways of coping may have contributed to what is happening now, identify the patterns that are keeping things going, and decide what we want to target for change.

We can then work on those things together in quite a concrete way. If difficulties arise in relationships, for example, we might look closely at what happens in the heat of the moment and how you could recognise the pattern and make a different choice. At other times, we might use approaches such as EMDR to reduce the emotional intensity of traumatic memories, or mindfulness and compassion-focused techniques to change how you respond to yourself when things are difficult.

The aim is not only to understand yourself better, but to use that understanding to help something change.

My work draws particularly on Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT), EMDR, and Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT). I tailor how we work to you, rather than assuming that everyone needs the same type of therapy.
